Most web application that contain a login form (or ask for any other sensitive information) should connect using the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
If the URL begins with https:// then the site is using SSL. If the URL begins with just http:// then it's not.
If your browser gives you any SSL-related warnings after you click on a link in an email, DO NOT CONTINUE and DO NOT ENTER any sensitive information into the site! This is often a sure sign something is wrong.
